Install Git Bash (Windows Only)
Mac users: skip this step. macOS already has everything built in.
Why this exists
Section titled “Why this exists”Git Bash is a command-line environment that Claude Code needs in order to run on Windows. Without it, setup fails partway through the next steps.
Install it now so Claude Code has what it needs when it launches.
Install it
Section titled “Install it”Run the installer from your Downloads folder. The installer asks a lot of questions — accept the defaults on every screen. There is nothing here you need to configure.
You will never open it
Section titled “You will never open it”You do not need to launch Git Bash or use it directly. Claude Code finds it automatically.
This is also not the same thing as “installing Git so you can use Git.” You still will not type Git commands. This is purely about giving Claude Code a shell to work in.
If a developer tools prompt appears later
Section titled “If a developer tools prompt appears later”That is expected. Click Install and let it finish. See Prerequisites.
